How To Keep Children Entertained At Weddings

If you do decide to have children at your wedding, i understand that sometimes it can be hard for them to keep still, stay engaged or even quiet sometimes! The idea of a wedding to a child can be quite a boring experience for them as they do not really understand how important the day is for the happy couple.

Believe me, i've attended some weddings where children who have been nominated to a be a flower girl/ page boy has flat out refused on the day because they simply do not want to do it when the moment comes. The moment can be quite daunting for a child with all eyes on them so i totally understand that sometimes plans do not come together as planned and tantrams may occur! Ideally, especially within the ceremony, we want our guests to be as quiet as possible so that the wedding can be recorded clearly by your potential wedding videographer if you decide to have one.

I'm going to give you some simple ideas to consider incorporating into your wedding day to keep children entertained for the day:

1. An additional expense, however why not consider setting up a bouncy castle for the children to play on whilst you are waiting for each part of the day to flow, i.e before the wedding meals/reception party. This has a great benefit of keeping the children entertained whilst also tiring them out so the chances are that they might sleep well on the evening! This is also a great idea for capturing the most candid shots- I have no doubt by the end of the evening, guests or the bride or groom may get involved- the more the merrier!

2. Consider garden party games for children to play with- Whether this is a ringtoss game, hopscotch or a beanbag throwing game. The chances are if multiple children attend the wedding day, they can all interact and entertain themselves between each other.

3. Consider colouring books/ activity books- This will give children chance to sit down and focus on whats in the books rather than whats going on in the wedding. You can also consider printable colouring in sheets to print at home to reduce the costs. You can also purchase tablecloths that children can colour in on the day- I'd advise crayons only, i think felt tips pens is a disaster waiting to happen- no ruined wedding outfits please!

4. Hire an entertainer- Why not consider a magician, children love magic tricks! Bonus points if your magician is able to make balloon animals too to keep them occupied and engaged.

5. Even something so small like setting up a bubble machine or giving children a bottle of bubbles each- this is a great way for your children to be entertained easily whilst being cost effective!

6. Although again this may be a larger additional cost, companies online hire out soft play areas for children that are set up within the location of the wedding and collected by the company at the end of the day or as discussed.
