What we're all about

Photography - its what I love, whether its photographing a wedding, a Himalayan mountain range or a carnival. If you like the look of my work then get in touch, and lets talk about your big day. I specialise in reportage wedding photography but if you'd like a few posed shots I'm happy to help, I also love shooting around the golden hour and am currently working on a twilight project - in which I take couples out for a lit portrait as darkness falls.

I came into photography through my uncle who is a professional Landscape photographer, seeing his posters on the walls at home inspired me to pick up a camera and start seeing the world through a lens.

My photography has been published around the world by National Geographic, The Times, The Guardian, The Independent and many more. If you'd like to see more of it check out www.benpipe.com

What Our Couples Say

Suzie Mcmanus

An amazing photographer, the album we received was of high quality. Very professional service & would highly recommend.

Matt Wayman

Ben, you were fantastic for our wedding in Kent. We loved our wedding pictures. They were imaginative, creative & stunning. Thank you very much

Kieran Clubb

Ben is a great photographer and provided a very professional service for our wedding. He worked closely with us in the build up to determine what we wanted and his photos on the day were excellent.

Paul Jennings

Ben photographed our summer wedding in Surrey and was a calm and assured influence on the day. We came away with beautiful photographs. We liked them so much that we made a hardback book out of them. I throughly recommend.

Chloe Stacey

We were recommended Ben by a mutual friend and weren't disappointed, our wedding shots were first class, original ideas, excellent reportage style shots we wanted and some clever tricks with the evening sunset. Working with Ben was brilliant and I would recommend him for any occasion!

Brenda Ammeraal

I loved working with Ben. So professional and pleasant at the same time. Our wedding photos are of amazing quality. With so many things on our mind in preparation for the wedding and organising it from abroad, we were not exactly sure what we wanted, but Ben just made a perfect set.

James Dawson

Ben shot our Dorset wedding back in September and I have to say from start to finish he was a pleasure to work with The pictures have come out better than we could have wished for. We opted for the second shooter (Chris) option and they worked superbly as a team. All of our guests commented on what a great duo they were! Thanks Ben for giving us such great photos to remind us of our special day! Mr & Mrs Dawson

Debbie Hill

We really enjoyed working with Ben back in August 2014, he took the time in getting to know us and what we wanted. He was professional, discreet and nothing was too much to ask. On the day we had an issue in that we were unable to take our traditional photographs in a certain place and so we were unable to have them. I didn't need to worry though as Ben was very creative and took natural action shots of all my family and friends which definitely made up for the earlier issue. I love looking at my wedding photographs and I always get comments on how beautiful and natural the photographs are. Thank you Ben.

Rhiannon Lewis

Working with Ben was fantastic - he's very professional, whilst still being very approachable and great fun. His photos of our wedding in Weymouth last October are absolutely stunning and everything we'd hoped for and more. We opted for the top tier package and we're really glad we did - made things so much easier and less stressful on the day - not having to worry about if he captured everything (since he brought along a 2nd photographer) and he was there until the wee hours too. Before the wedding day we met up with Ben over a few pints and explained our hopes & ideas for the day which he took on board and wove into his own style. What was captured was all the beautiful little natural moments that we wanted, plus all the big formal photos too. Couldn't have asked for more! Ben also attended the wedding in a great suit, so he blended right in and didn't make anyone feel awkward or intruded upon. So glad we picked Ben for our photos that'll be hung on our walls, and our family's walls for many many years to come

FAQ

Do you shoot film or digital?

I learnt photography with black and white film and an Olympus SLR camera - now I shoot exclusively digitally, always in the RAW format which gives the best tonal range - don't book a photographer who isn't shooting in RAW.

What equipment do you work with?

I work with Nikon D4 and D810 cameras accompanied by the best Nikon Lenses. My three favourite pieces of glass for a wedding are the Sigma 35mm F/1.4, Nikon 85mm F/1.4 and the prime Nikon 135mm F/2. I also use Profoto Lighting kit with 3 and 5 foot Octaboxes.

Colour or Black & White?

I'll provide colour and black & white versions of all the final images - some images will suit one format and vice versa. If you have a strong preference for B + W then I can do my post production with that as the priority.

What qualifications do you have?

I graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Photography in 2006 from Plymouth College of Art and Design, also passed the British Institute of Professional Photographers qualifying exam.

How much experience do you have?

I've worked around the world - shooting from Nepal to New York and have worked on ad campaigns for major companies such as Chevron and Chrysler. I shot my first wedding in Dorset when I was 17, now I shoot 10-15 a year. I also undertake commercial commissions and shoot personal projects.

Do you shoot group shots and how long do they take?

Yes I do! It helps if you can provide a list of the family / friends you would like included and I'll ensure there is time set aside for them. Usually formals take between 30-45 minutes. Doing them all before or after the ceremony speeds things up considerably. Otherwise time is wasted setting up the lights and rounding people up twice instead of once.

What if I don’t like my photograph being taken?

I often find that the couples who tell me, when we first meet, that they do not generally like their photos being taken, actually enjoy the wedding photography on the day. I have a fun and relaxed approach and am confident of capturing you at your best which helps to put you at ease and enjoy the photography.

We like the idea of an engagement shoot – where can we do this?

Anywhere! Preferably somewhere picturesque and quiet – woods, beach or around some interesting architecture. The most daring location I've shot had the couple in the midst of traffic in front of Tower Bridge.

Do you have relevant insurance?

Yes I've got Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance.

How many pictures will you take at my wedding?

There is no limit to the number of photographs I take – I will take as many pictures as there are opportunities. The quantity might depend on the size of your wedding, the location or the weather. On a full day's shooting it will usually be between 1500 and 3000 images.

What if it rains?

A good photographer should be able to cope with all conditions - Where possible I will visit the venue in advance to ensure there are locations we can use for the group photos, couple shots and bridal portraits in the event of bad weather, and I'll be bringing lighting equipment with me in case we do have to shoot indoors.

Can we meet you before the wedding to discuss our requirements?

I believe it is mutually beneficial for both parties to meet up before the big day. However, if a meeting proves logistically impossible we can still discuss all your queries or concerns over the phone and I can provide you with examples of my work to ensure that you are choosing the right photographer for you. The meeting is free of charge and does not commit you to anything.
