As a photographer it is becoming more and more common for couples to have smaller weddings with immediate family only, or even more so, an elopement wedding. Elopement wedding photography may be the couple only, or a couple of close friends to act as a witness on the marriage certificate. I have had the pleasure of being a witness on more occasions than I care to mention when being the photographer charged with capturing a couples day.

FAQ

What are you like?

A bit about me… this is possibly the hardest page of a blog to fill, but I’ll give it a go…

Allan Law Photography is well me, Allan Law. Born in Dumfries and living in Ayrshire until the age of 16 when I moved with my parents to Breakish on the Isle of Skye.

Now residing in Beauly near Inverness where the business is also based enables me to be pretty central to the Highlands on a whole, whilst still living in one of the most stunning places this planet has to offer….Previously a Canon DSLR user, I have now switched brand and camera to the utterly amazing Fuji X series cameras and lenses. Yes I’ve gone all mirrorless! This switch completely changed the way I shoot weddings, I was heading towards documentary capture and the Fuji X System has allowed me to hone this further. The majority of my weddings are elopement or small weddings and the system allows me to capture your day to the best of my ability.

Having had various jobs ranging from working in the old Main St Co-op in Kyle of Lochalsh when I left school to manufacturing carbon fiber in one of the largest producers in the UK at the time. During my time in employment I realised and discovered a photographic talent, but not yet a wedding photography one, I also realised that I had pretty much taken for granted the scenery I was surrounded by and had spent my latter teenage years in on Skye. This began the 35mm SLR era with me learning how to compose a landscape, metering, aperture and shutter speeds, progressing through the plethora of advice, forums, groups and videos available online and in printed material.

The film camera was soon destined for retirement on the shelf when I purchased my first digital camera, a Fuji S602 Pro (although why it was a PRO I will never know). This was a whole new world to me but I treated it in the same way as a 35mm SLR, or at least tried! digital memory cards were far easier than a film and the thought of no processing costs was too much, I became a ‘machine gunner’ rapid succession of multiple images of the same thing and anything. This I later weaned myself off by returning to a 35mm SLR and re-teaching myself that you don’t take 6 shots to get one good one just because you can.

Having spent a few years on landscape and nature photography I was being asked if I would consider doing portraits and wedding photography? Wedding Photography was a ‘no chance’ reply as I knew that this was someone’s BIG day and I did not yet have the experience or the skills where I would have been happy jumping in with both feet. Roll forward a few years and I am now at the point where I am second shooting for a professional photographer, who by my third wedding informed me that there was no need for me to second shoot, as I was telling him what to shoot and how…oops!

Now a leap forward seven years to today and where I am now, full time Inverness wedding photographer, portrait photographer, newborn and baby photographer, commercial and event photographer and ‘if it’s in front of me…i’ll shoot it’ photographer. If Carlsberg made jobs…no forget that…my clients make my job and for that I am grateful.

2014 saw me becoming a Finalist in the Scottish Wedding Awards in the Highland Wedding Photographer of the Year, one of only two Finalists. Whilst a great achievement I managed the runners up position, 2015 is a another year and again I shall strive forward.
